Heart Beat

Frederique Constant focuses on heart related charities as it is in line with its signature, the Heart Beat. In 1994, Frederique Constant developed its first Heart Beat watch. The purpose of the Heart Beat development was to show the mechanical nature of these Frederique Constant watches. Heart Beat watches have an aperture at the position of the balance wheel to show that the movement of the watch is mechanical. Early in the 1990’s, automatic mechanical watches were slowly making their return to the market after the quartz crisis of the 1970-1980’s. Typically, the exterior of such mechanical watches looks similar to quartz watches except that the second hand moves continuously. On quartz watches, the second hand makes 60 steps per minute. At Frederique Constant, we considered it important to better show the difference between mechanical and quartz watches. In a mechanical watch, the balance wheel beats 28’800 times per hour. The balance wheel rotates clockwise and counter clockwise on its axes in a large ruby jewel. Its rotation is controlled by the hairspring, which constantly coils and uncoils, and can be seen through the open eye of the Heart Beat watches. The Heart Beat has become the signature of the Frederique Constant brand.

Heart related charities

Somewhere out there is a child with a bad heart that could end a potentially eventful life and a future replete with possibilities. Frederique Constant donated two cheques in the value of $50’000 (2008) and $75’000 (2011) to the International Children’s Heart Foundation, a passionate organization that brings skills, technology and knowledge to diagnose and care for children with congenital heart disease to developing countries.

In 2009, we lent our support by funding Paint a Smile’s bid to decorate the Beijing Children’s Cardiology Department and put smiles on the faces of children dealing with heart-related issues.

In 2010, we awarded the American Heart Association with a $50,000 check for their charitable efforts to prevent heart disease and stroke. We stated, “Driven by Passion since we started our company, Frederique Constant is very honoured to award the American Heart Association and their passionate projects to save lives. We wish and hope that our donation will permit them to actualize their goal.”

In 2011, we also held a benefit for the Hong Kong Children’s Heart Foundation, with Chinese actress and Frederique Constant brand ambassador ShuQi helping us drum popular support for the cause of children with congenital heart problems.

With passion, we continue to provide support to heart and child related charities. In 2012, we will again donate a major cheque to a charitable cause. The next time you see someone wearing one of the beautiful Double Heart Beat Collection watches, remember that part of the cost for that watch went to help a patient.

FREDERIQUE CONSTANT CELEBRATES AT THE FINISH OF LA CARRERA PANAMERICANA 2011

Geneva - November 2011

With a history dating back to 1950, La Carrera Panamericana is a legendary race that hosts hundreds of drivers and co-drivers and millions of classic car aficionados. This year, during the 24th edition of the event, one hundred and eighteen cars with drivers from 15 different nationalities participated in La Carrera Panamericana. They traveled more than 3’000 kilometers (1’800 mi) across Mexico, starting their journey in Huatulco, located on the south coast of Mexico, to finish seven days later in the colonial city of Zacatecas.

The first car to reach the finish podium -located in front of the Cathedral of Zacatecas- was the Studebaker (#102) of Ricardo Triviño. As the winner of this 24th edition, both him and his co-driver Mr. Marco Hernández were extremely proud and excited to have won this race, a competition of endurance, for both men and machine. Mr. Ricardo Triviño said upon his glorious arrival:  ‘Perseverance, wisdom and true passion are the key elements required to win a race like this. It is exciting that Frederique Constant supports these same values in the development of their watch collections!’ Behind the winners came Douglas Mockett (Oldsmobile, #133) and Hilaire Damiron (Buick, #115) on second and third place for the overall race.

Some other famous drivers that attended this competition were Jo Ramírez, better know as the “Champion Maker”, and the Mexican driver Michel Jourdain.

Pedro Neumann, Frederique Constant´s exclusive distributor in Mexico, welcomed the competitors at the finish in Zacatecas. Neumann said: “La Carrera Panamericana is the most important automotive event in Mexico, and world famous for being one of the toughest and most challenging road races in history. Frederique Constant is passionate about classic and vintage cars, and therefore extremely pleased and honored to be the Official Timekeeper of one of the most important classic car events in the world”.

During the award ceremony, Pedro Neumann on behalf of Frederique Constant awarded the winners with a Frédérique Constant timepiece from the Vintage Rally Collection. This collection was entirely inspired by the magical universe of classic and vintage cars.

It is this same passion that successfully guides Frederique Constant on its journey through the world of Swiss watchmaking.

La Carrera Panamericana, The Mexican Road Race (1950-1954), was one of the most famous events in auto racing history. Many of the most famous drivers in the world tested their skills driving 2'000 miles across Mexico at full speed. The event was revived as a stage rally in 1988 and for twenty-four years has offered both experienced racers and novices an opportunity to experience the thrills and challenges of the original Pan Am. Today it is unique in the world—racing against the clock at full speed on public highways for a week --- and passionately sponsored by Frederique Constant Geneve!

Yesterday, Friday October 21st, 2011, one hundred cars lined up in southern Mexico to race 1'600 miles north to the beautiful city of Zacatecas. The event passes though the heart of the country, a string of impressive mountains and colorful colonial cities. The Mexican Highway Patrol, whose top officers travel with the race, clears the highways for the timed speed runs. Along the way, two million spectators will cheer the competitors along.

Each night the race rests in a different city. This year the Pan Am will start in

the Pacific resort of Huatulco and stop for the night in Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Morelia, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas. These cities are at high altitude, so the weather is typically cool and clear.

The Mexican Road Race is always an adventure. Just getting a race car to the start is a challenge. The Pan Am remains a serious test of drivers and their cars, plus it’s a major cultural experience. Finishing the race after seven long days behind the wheel is another major accomplishment. Earning a spot on the podium is a huge bonus. It's a lifetime of memories.
