Geneva - November 2011

With a history dating back to 1950, La Carrera Panamericana is a legendary race that hosts hundreds of drivers and co-drivers and millions of classic car aficionados. This year, during the 24th edition of the event, one hundred and eighteen cars with drivers from 15 different nationalities participated in La Carrera Panamericana. They traveled more than 3’000 kilometers (1’800 mi) across Mexico, starting their journey in Huatulco, located on the south coast of Mexico, to finish seven days later in the colonial city of Zacatecas.

The first car to reach the finish podium -located in front of the Cathedral of Zacatecas- was the Studebaker (#102) of Ricardo Triviño. As the winner of this 24th edition, both him and his co-driver Mr. Marco Hernández were extremely proud and excited to have won this race, a competition of endurance, for both men and machine. Mr. Ricardo Triviño said upon his glorious arrival:  ‘Perseverance, wisdom and true passion are the key elements required to win a race like this. It is exciting that Frederique Constant supports these same values in the development of their watch collections!’ Behind the winners came Douglas Mockett (Oldsmobile, #133) and Hilaire Damiron (Buick, #115) on second and third place for the overall race.

Some other famous drivers that attended this competition were Jo Ramírez, better know as the “Champion Maker”, and the Mexican driver Michel Jourdain.

Pedro Neumann, Frederique Constant´s exclusive distributor in Mexico, welcomed the competitors at the finish in Zacatecas. Neumann said: “La Carrera Panamericana is the most important automotive event in Mexico, and world famous for being one of the toughest and most challenging road races in history. Frederique Constant is passionate about classic and vintage cars, and therefore extremely pleased and honored to be the Official Timekeeper of one of the most important classic car events in the world”.

During the award ceremony, Pedro Neumann on behalf of Frederique Constant awarded the winners with a Frédérique Constant timepiece from the Vintage Rally Collection. This collection was entirely inspired by the magical universe of classic and vintage cars.

It is this same passion that successfully guides Frederique Constant on its journey through the world of Swiss watchmaking.

La Carrera Panamericana, The Mexican Road Race (1950-1954), was one of the most famous events in auto racing history. Many of the most famous drivers in the world tested their skills driving 2'000 miles across Mexico at full speed. The event was revived as a stage rally in 1988 and for twenty-four years has offered both experienced racers and novices an opportunity to experience the thrills and challenges of the original Pan Am. Today it is unique in the world—racing against the clock at full speed on public highways for a week --- and passionately sponsored by Frederique Constant Geneve!

Yesterday, Friday October 21st, 2011, one hundred cars lined up in southern Mexico to race 1'600 miles north to the beautiful city of Zacatecas. The event passes though the heart of the country, a string of impressive mountains and colorful colonial cities. The Mexican Highway Patrol, whose top officers travel with the race, clears the highways for the timed speed runs. Along the way, two million spectators will cheer the competitors along.

Each night the race rests in a different city. This year the Pan Am will start in

the Pacific resort of Huatulco and stop for the night in Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Morelia, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and Zacatecas. These cities are at high altitude, so the weather is typically cool and clear.

The Mexican Road Race is always an adventure. Just getting a race car to the start is a challenge. The Pan Am remains a serious test of drivers and their cars, plus it’s a major cultural experience. Finishing the race after seven long days behind the wheel is another major accomplishment. Earning a spot on the podium is a huge bonus. It's a lifetime of memories.

This year sees the 29th annual edition of La Carrera Panamericana, which will start in Huatulco, a developing resort area in Mexico, and stop for the night in Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Morelia, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and will finish five days later in Zacatecas. The participants of this world class event will line up in southern Mexico to race 1’800 miles north to Zacatecas, one of the most beautiful colonial towns in Mexico, with its attractive ancient buildings and cobbled streets. The competitors will drive through the heart of Mexico, across impressive mountain ranges and colorful colonial cities, along the route.

More than 100 classic and vintage cars are confirmed, including the participation of some champion drivers from Germany, France, Netherlands and the United States.

Born in 1950, La Carrera Panamericana is one of the most emblematic classic car rallies in the world, and has become a true legend. After the Mexican section of the Panamerican Highway was completed in 1950, a five-day race across the country was organized by the Mexican government to advertise this feat and to attract international business into Mexico. The race ran almost entirely along the new highway, which crossed the country from north to south for a total distance of over 3,300 kilometres (2,100 mi).

For Frédérique Constant, sponsoring La Carrera Panamericana forms an exciting and logical new chapter in its history of classic car related sponsorships around the world. If there is one element that is required to take part in La Carrera Panamericana, it is true Passion. It is this same Passion that guides Frédérique Constant on its highly successful journey through the world of fine watch making.

Under the premise of its slogan 'Live your Passion' the brand encourages people around the world to follow their passion. Being part of La Carrera Panamericana perfectly reflects this devotion. All participating cars will bear the Frédérique Constant logo, and both the driver and the navigator of the winning equippes will be rewarded with an exclusive Frédérique Constant timepiece from the Vintage Rally Collection, upon their glorious arrival in Zacatecas, Mexico.

We wish all teams wisdom and the best of luck on their extraordinary journey!

The award-winning boat was a 1939 Gar Wood. A 19 foot runabout with 103 horse-power 6 cylinder Chrylser engine, owned by Jonathan and Jean Trevillyan of Acton, CA. The 1939

Gar Wood was awarded the best Marque Class and Best Overall Boat in Show. Jonathan and Jean Trevillyan were also bestowed with an example of a Frédérique Constant Runabout timepiece.

Since 2009, Swiss watch manufacturer Frédérique Constant celebrates the legendary Runabout yachts of the roaring 20s by offering an attractive series of limited edition timepieces named “Runabout”.

More about Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance

The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance Wooden Boat Show was founded by members of the Tahoe Yacht Club in 1972. Hosted annually by the Club’s Foundation since 1994, it is regarded internationally as the premier event for maritime enthusiasts. For its 39th year, the Foundation had selected ‘Gar Wood, the Gentleman’s Runabout’ as featured Marque Class. These luxurious and powerful “aristocrats of motorboats” were first introduced in 1922 by inventor, industrialist and record setting speedboat racer Garfield A. Wood and are a fan favorite. The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance showcased over 100 antique boats this year and drew more than 5,000 participants and visitors. The goal of the Foundation is to maintain the heritage of wooden boating while providing an entertaining and learning experience for all to enjoy. After the past years, with proceeds from the Concours, the charitable Foundation has awarded more than $250,000 in grants to non-profit organizations in the Tahoe Basin to advance maritime education.
