Diamonds, diamonds everywhere

Each of the new Slimline Joaillerie models—the Chocolate, the Mother of Pearl and the Grey--share a number of features. As the Slimline name implies, this collection is beautifully delicate in appearance. Each model is a mere 5.18mm thick (or less than one-quarter of an inch), and the cases are all plated with gleaming rose gold.

Surrounding the 37mm diameter case are no fewer than 60 shining diamonds set in the bezel; one for every minute of every hour. As if that weren’t enough, another 10 diamonds are set by hand in the watch face as hour indexes.

A date display is at the 6 o’clock position; hand applied Roman numeral indexes mark the 12 o’clock position, and each watch’s hour, minute and date functions are controlled by the FC-220 caliber movement. Finally, each watch strap is fastened by means of a rose gold plated tongue buckle.

So which to choose?

Chocolate doesn’t have to be fattening, you know. The Slimline Joaillerie Chocolate model is deliciously perfect proof of that fact. Frederique Constant introduces the ‘Venice Editions’ of the Runabout, consisting of a Chronograph version and a Three-hand Automatic with date. Both timepieces feature a stainless steel case and a silvered dial with applied, rose gold plated Arabic indexes. Runabout Venice Event

Runabout Challenge 2012 in Venice
End of April 2012, Frederique Constant hosted a unique event on the waters of Venice, to celebrate its connection with Runabout boats. After sponsoring the Helice Classique on Lake Geneva and the Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance in the USA, it was time to organize a dedicated Frederique Constant Runabout event. A select group of 200 clients and members of the press enjoyed a three-day event in the City of Water. A large fleet of Runabout boats, gathered specifically for this event proved to be stylish means of transportation and offered amazing views of Venice. During the actual Challenge, teams in each Runabout boat had to compete for the Frederique Constant Runabout Trophy. The event’s aim was to pay homage and to gather many of the remaining Runabout yachts. Yachts that today - as in their heyday - symbolize elegance, sophistication and ageless design. It is these characteristics that make the devotion of Frédérique Constant to Runabout boats so apt, so perfect, because those same values and qualities apply to the Runabout Collection.

Runabout
A Runabout is a gentlemen’s motorboat holding between four and eight people, well suited to moving about on the water. The first runabouts date back to the 1920s and were originally small, fast, powerful varnished wooden boats created to take advantage of the power of a V8 inboard engine. In order to gain speed, the hull shape had to be designed to take advantage of hydroplaning; a hydrofoil-like design would allow the boat to skim atop the water's surface at high speed instead of needing to push aside large quantities of water to move forward. A classic Runabout boat is a design icon, a moving sculpture in wood, chrome and glass that commands attention wherever it goes. Add to this a long list of famous owners and an association with exotic Mediterranean locations such as Monaco and San Tropez, and it is no wonder that the Runabout has, over time, become a legend. the oven and produce an even surface. The slightest imperfection in the mixed powder, the supporting metal plate or a dust speckle will ruin the dial and the enameller has to start all over again.

Manufacture Tourbillon Caliber

Based on its award-winning Heart Beat Manufacture Calibre, Frédérique Constant developed its Tourbillon fully in-house with a number of unique features:

Silicium (or Silicon) Escapement Wheel

The Silicium Escapement Wheel and Lever have the following three main advantages:

has lower inertia, increasing energy efficiency.Good friction propertiesLower friction reduces loss of energy, hence

the energy requirement for the calibre is lower.

With its three main advantages compared to a regular escapement wheel, a Silicium escapement wheel is particularly useful in a Tourbillon mechanism.  The reduced weight of the Silicium escapement wheel and the better friction properties result in a substantially higher energy efficiency. As a result, the Frédérique Constant Tourbillon with Silicium escapement wheel has an amplitude of over 300 degrees in dial-up and dial-down positions. Even in the crown-down position, the amplitude is over 275 degrees, which is substantially better than the performance of other high-end tourbillons.

Smart Weight Balancing

The Frédérique Constant Tourbillon Cage consists of 80 individual parts. Each of these parts is produced to the highest possible tolerance, with a precision of 1-2 micron (0.001-0.002 mm). Many of the parts are produced on Frédérique Constant’s ultra precise CNC machines in Plan-les-Ouates. These CNC machines of the latest custom-made generation have a tolerance of 1 micron on the X and Y axes and 2 micron on the Z axe. Even with such a high degree of precision, it is impossible to have a 100% equal distribution of weight in the individual parts; for a Tourbillon to run accurately, an equal distribution of weight is essential. Frédérique Constant solved this problem by the patented “Smart Screw” system on the outer edge of the Tourbillon cage. At first, the Tourbillon cage is constructed with a slight over-weight opposite the Smart Screw system on the main Cage Wheel. Thereafter, a highly skilled watchmaker is able to balance the weight into the center of the Tourbillon cage by adding or exchanging tiny metal rings under the two screws on the main cage wheel. Typically, 8 hours are required for a watchmaker to adjust the tiny rings and balance the weight perfectly for the entire Tourbillon cage.

Fast Oscillation

The Frédérique Constant Tourbillon runs at 4 Hertz whereby the balance wheel beats 28’800 times per hour. Hence, in a Frédérique Constant Tourbillon, the balance wheel swings 28,800 times an hour and the gear train moves forward 691,200 times in 24 hours. In four years, this represents over one billion(!) impulses.

Most competing Tourbillons run at 3 Hertz only. The higher ‘Beats per Hour’ (BpH) enable a higher accuracy of the Tourbillon caliber. The higher oscillation also makes the caliber less susceptible to gyration effects.

Individually Numbered

Each Tourbillon cage is individually numbered to show the Limited Edition of 188 pieces. The minuscule top plate in the center of the Tourbillon cage is sequentially numbered during production on the Frédérique Constant CNC machine. The number on the cage will match the Limited Edition number on the case, making the combination of calibre and case unique.

Sebastien Schneiter - Frederique Constant Junior ambassador - European Championship update

The Laser 4.7 European Championship have started. 240 participants and 29 Nations represented!

After two days of racing and 4 regattas sailed in great conditions Sebastien Schneiter - Frédérique Constant Junior Ambassador- is 8 overall and 3rd in the "less than 16 years of age" category. The score is very tight and only few points separate the first 15.

Two more days of sailing (qualifying series) took place before the fleet will be separated into Gold (first 59), silver and bronze fleet according to each individual results. Final series took place on Saturday and Sunday.

Sébastien Schneiter, finished 6th in the overall European championship and at the second place in the "less than 16 years of age" category! Congratulations Sébastien!

Alexandra, the second Swiss Byte sailor is doing well and close to be qualified.
